Summary

Spring 1868 marked the beginning of the publication of El Mentirón, in Vitoria. El Mentirón was a weekly satirical, literary and illustrated magazine, whose main producer, director, editor and drawing artist was the republican from Alava Ricardo Becerro de Bengoa, a man of great relevancy in the Basquist cultural world. Although it qualified itself as a purely literary newspaper, El Mentirón soon opted for contending in the convulsed political arena of that era and it advocated a federal republic, a political commitment that identified it with the defense of the special jurisdictions (Fueros) and Basquism.
